Naming the Black Keys

Lesson Progress
0% Complete

Goal
Understand how to use flats & sharps.

Vocabulary
•    flat (♭)= closest note to the left
•    sharp (♯) = closest note to the right

Essential Knowledge
•    Each black key has 2 names: a flat name & a sharp name.
•    The white keys with no black key in between them (BC & EF) each have a flat or sharp name in addition to its letter name.

Tips
•    Choosing whether to call a note by its flat name or its sharp name depends on key signature and functional directionality, which we will cover in later lessons!

Fun Fact
•    There are 52 white keys and 36 black keys on a full-sized piano.
